My name is ___________ and I am calling to urge you to vote NO on H.3728, the Education Censorship Bill.

H.B. 3728 is a classroom censorship bill. It is nearly identical to laws in other states where African American A.P. History has been called illegal, Black History month celebrations have been cancelled, and books that talk about racism, or even just feature Black characters, have been banned.

H.B. 3728 will likely prevent our students from learning about systemic inequities and historic and modern oppression. That means the next generation of South Carolinians will be less prepared to understand the realities of our world. We have not solved systemic racism in this country. Instead, it has morphed and evolved for centuries.

Our educators are trained experts who should be trusted to guide their students’ academic growth. We are going through a severe teacher shortage in South Carolina. This bill, propelled by out-of-state extremist groups, will only force our valued educators out of the classroom.

Regardless of the bill’s final language, it will serve as a vehicle for radical attacks on educators. Students will lose opportunities to think critically about the way our society operates. Parents, who overwhelmingly trust their children’s educators, will see their children’s education undermined as a byproduct of a national culture war.
